History
London Britain Township, PA is a township in Chester County, PA. The population is estimated at 3,139. White Clay Creek Preserve is a Pennsylvania state park in London Britain Township along White Clay Creek.
On March 14, 1681, William Penn received a charter from the King of England for a grant of land to establish a colony in the New World. This colony was named Pennsylvania, or Penn’s Woods. The Township of London Britain was organized in 1725 from a tract of land belonging to the London Company of Great Britain. The southernmost part of the township was originally disputed territory between Pennsylvania and Maryland, resolved eventually by the Mason–Dixon line. The southernmost section of the township formed the northern section of New Munster, a large settlement tract established by Maryland and named after the southern province of Munster in Ireland. New Munster acted as an early genesis point and catalyst for large Scotch-Irish settlement and expansion into Chester County and points west in Pennsylvania.
Lunn’s Tavern and the Thompson Farm are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lunn’s Tavern, also known as The Wilkins Property, is a historic inn and tavern located in London Britain Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. It has three sections. The original section was built about 1760, and is a two-story, stone structure with a gambrel roof. Part of the original section was altered when the brick addition was made in 1830. The modifications included adding stucco to the stone exterior walls and modifying the roof to the gable style. The 1830 brick addition has a wooden porch structure. It was the site of the writing of a famous letter from Thomas McKean to George Read on September 26, 1777, detailing the situation in Delaware and his actions upon assuming the presidency of the State of Delaware.
Thompson Farm, also known as the Pierson Farm, is a historic home and farm located in London Britain Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. It has five contributing buildings. They are a brick farmhouse, a stone and frame bank barn (c. 1800), frame outhouse, chicken house, and corn crib. The farmhouse was built in 1833, and expanded in 1857.
