That’s the Spirit! – How to Enjoy this Festive Season

With Hanukkah, Christmas, and the New Year just ahead of us, December is the month to make merry and get festive with family, friends, and a host of special events. Let’s dive into the best ways to make the most of the holiday season.

In addition to the plethora of traditional Hanukkah events, menorah lightings and services going on in Philly, there are yet more holiday themed activities that the whole family can enjoy. Temple Judea is hosting an interactive community celebration with singing, crafts, raffle prizes, delicious donuts and other treats. The Pop Shop Collingswood invites you to light the candles, play dreidel, sing songs and eat a delicious dinner, all included in the ticket.

Winter at Dilworth Park is one of Philly’s best seasonal attractions. From November 1 to March 26, there are holiday pop-ups galore to enjoy. Wintergarden on the Greenfield Lawn is an open-air wonderland of lights, topiaries, rustic décor and mulled wine. Enjoy a ski chalet-inspired setup with fire pits, seasonal cocktails and food at Rothman Orthopedics Cabin, while the Made in Philadelphia Holiday Market is a haven for homemade crafts, trinkets and treats with over 40 local vendors.

Looking for something kid friendly? Try LumiNature, an immersive display that transforms the Philadelphia Zoo into an incredible spectacle with over one million lights. Favorites like the 100-foot aquarium tunnel and 21-foot snake are joined by a 15-foot glowing blue gorilla, an under-the-sea-inspired holiday tree and more. While you take it all in, seasonal food, live performers, hot chocolate for the kids and spirits for the adults complete the experience.

Shop for all your holiday gifts at the Christmas Village in Love Park. Be filled with the magic of the season with the Holiday Garden Railway: Nighttime Express. And of course, Christmas at Longwood Gardens is not to be missed!

New Year

Ring in the New Year not one time but two with the Rivers Casino New Year’s Eve Fireworks on the Waterfront. These free firework displays take place at 6 pm and midnight, so pick your perfect spot and enjoy the show.

All aboard the Moshulu, where a four-course dinner prefaces the 6 pm fireworks show. And don’t rush off, because the ship is also hosting an open bar New Year’s Eve bash beginning at 9 pm.

If you’re after a party and live music, head to Studio 2022 New Year’s Eve Party where live entertainment is provided by Let’s Groove Tonight (the #1 Earth, Wind and Fire tribute band), a DJ, delicious bites, and open bar. Philly’s own Disco Biscuits will be performing at the The Fillmore Philadelphia over December 30-31. South Jazz Kitchen is hosting the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble (December 31), while Center City’s Jazz Café is serving up a romantic three-course dinner to the smooth sounds of Chelsea Reed and the Fair Weather Nine, if you’re after a quieter night.

Want to go all out? Bring in the new year in true 20s style with the Roaring 20s New Year’s Eve Party at Stella of New Hope (flapper attire preferred).

On New Year’s Day, prepare for a bright 2023 with one of Philly’s most famous traditions, the Mummers Parade. Watch over 10,000 costumed marchers bring the festivity down Broad Street from City Hall to Washington Avenue, followed by Broadway style performances at the Pennsylvania Convention. End the day with a party in the streets that will have you celebrating well into the night.
